The most mysterious beetle
Described in 1996 from a single specimen found in the window of a forest cabin on the western slopes of Sikhote-Alin mountain in the Russian Far East, Sikhotealinia
zhiltzovae is a real blast from the past. Tthe only other representatives of this family (Jurodidae) of beetles are Jurassic fossils.
The Jurodidae have a strange mix of characteristics and taxonomists have had a hard time working out how they’re related to other beetles. Most interesting of all is that they have three simple eyes (ocelli) on their head, which is unique among the beetles.
No other specimens of the living representative of this family have come to light in the 22 years since it was described. There’s more on this family of beetles in this paper
